either a specific product (sealy
posturepedic queen) or a general one
(coffee maker). You can specify that you
only want prices by including 'price' or

search terms. Remember, Google SMS is not
case sensitive, so 'F' and 'f' are the
same.

on the back of its cover), or a specific
product by entering its UPC code (the 12

About Google
SMS
-
What's Google SMS?
Google SMS is a new service that enables you
to search for certain kinds of information
with Google from a mobile phone or handheld
device (such as a Blackberry), and returns
your search results as text messages. Get
phone book listings, dictionary definitions,
product prices from Froogle, and more.
Please check
how to use Google SMS
to see sample queries and the types of results
you might get.
-
What
does SMS stand for?
SMS stands for Short Messaging Service. It's
also known as text messaging. But if you'd
like to make the first S stand for "search",
we won't tell.
-
What's a "beta"?
"Beta" is geek speak for a pilot program or
test version of a product. It means that the
Google SMS you see today is likely to evolve
and improve over time. You can help with that
process by sending your suggestions to
mailto:sms-support@google.com.
Using Google
SMS
-
Will
Google SMS work on my mobile phone or handheld
device?
It should, as long as you have a phone or
device that's able to do text messaging or
send and receive SMS messages. You don't need
a fancy phone with a web browser. Any SMS-enabled
phone will do. Even last year's model that now
feels as big as a toaster.
Please note, however, that Google SMS only
works on
major wireless providers
in the US.
You also need to make sure that you have text
messaging enabled on your service plan. If
you're not sure whether you have this
capability, please check with your wireless
provider.
-
How
much does it cost?
Google is not charging users to send a query
or receive results at this time. However, your
wireless provider's standard rates for sending
and receiving text messages still apply.
-
How
does it work? When I send a message using
Google SMS, who's replying to me?
When you use Google SMS, you're sending a
specialized query to Google. This could be a
query for a phone book listing or the
definition of a word or the square root of
7,569. Based on your query, Google determines
what specific information you're looking for
and automatically returns the top results.
Using Google SMS is not quite the same as
using Google.com. For example, when you search
on Google.com, your search results typically
include links to websites. Google SMS results
are text-only. There are no links or web
pages. Please check out
how to use Google SMS
to see sample queries and the types of results
you might get.
-
Does
Google SMS know where I'm sending my query
from?
Google does not know the location that you're
sending your query from. You'll get the same
fast results whether you're in Huntington, New
York or Huntington Beach, California.
-
Does
Google SMS work everywhere? Can I find pizza
restaurants in Palermo?
Right now, Google SMS only works in the U.S.
We're working hard to make it available when
and wherever you're on the go. In the
meantime, how about a little slice of heaven
in Little Italy? (try 'pizza 10013')
-
Which
wireless providers does Google SMS support?
Google SMS works on all major wireless
providers in the US , including AT&T, Cingular,
Nextel, Sprint PCS, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
-
Does
Google SMS work in other languages?
No, not yet. Google SMS only works in English
for now.
-
I
have free messages through my cell phone plan.
Can I use them for Google SMS?
Yes, you can. Please note that the Google SMS
queries you send and the messages you receive
with your results will each count towards your
SMS message total.
-
Does
sending a text message use up minutes of my
cell phone plan?
Nope. So no need to worry about keeping count
of all those anytime minutes.
-
Can I
get Google SMS help directly using my phone?
Of course. Help is always just a text message
away. Send the word 'help' as a text message
to the 5-digit US shortcode 46645, and you
should receive help information within a
minute or so.
Services
offered
-
What
information can I access using Google SMS?
Google SMS gives you access to information
that's especially helpful when you're out and
about. This includes:
-
Phone
book listings, including addresses and phone
numbers for US businesses and residences
-
Online
product prices for comparison shopping
-
Answers using Google's calculator function
-
Dictionary definitions
For more
details, please check out
how to use Google SMS.
-
Can I
access the web using Google SMS?
No. When you use Google SMS, you're sending
Google a specialized query, and Google returns
text-only results. There are no links or web
pages. You're not actually accessing the web
when you use Google SMS.
-
Can I
access my Gmail account?
Great idea, but unfortunately, no. You can't
access Gmail, just as you can't access the web
using Google SMS. But Google believes in
helping people access information whenever and
however they want. If you have a Gmail
account, you can use auto-forwarding to have
incoming messages automatically forwarded to
another account that you specify, including
accounts that you access using wireless
devices.
-
Can I
get ringtones or screensavers or downloads?
What about pictures?
Unfortunately not. You can use Google SMS to
get instant, precise answers, such as phone
book listings, dictionary definitions and
prices for comparison shopping.
-
How
can I learn when new features are made
available?
Visit the
How to use Google SMS
page to see all the latest information you can
get with Google SMS. Or, sign up for our
email mailing list,
and as we announce new features, you'll be
among the first to know.
-
Are
the results ads?
Google SMS results are answers to specialized
queries and come from specific Google services
such as Google Local or Froogle, based on the
information you're looking for.
Sending a
query
-
What's the number I should send queries to?
The 5-digit US shortcode 46645 (which
corresponds to GOOGL on most phones)
-
Are
queries case-sensitive?
Nope. You can type 'help' and we'll come to
the rescue just as quickly as if you'd typed
'HELP'.
-
I have big fingers and a tiny keyboard. Can
you spare me some typing with a few shortcuts?
Glad you asked. We built some nifty shortcuts
into Google SMS that should save you from
severe finger cramping.
-
Put a period between the business name and
the location to make sure you get business
listings ('pizza.10013' or 'pottery
barn.boston ma')' Use 'D' or 'Define' before
the word for dictionary definitions ('D
prosimian')
-
Use 'F' before the product, or 'price' or
'prices' at the beginning or end of your
query to find prices using Froogle ('F Sony
Handycam' or 'Sony Handycam price')
Remember, Google SMS queries are not case
sensitive, so 'D' is the same as 'd' .
To
receive a summary of these shortcuts on your
cell phone, please send a text message to
46645 with the word 'tips' or 'shortcuts'. For
more shortcuts, check out
how to use Google SMS.
Results as
text messages
-
How
do I get my results?
You'll receive your results as text messages
to your mobile phone or device.
-
Where
are these results coming from?
All Google SMS results are Google search
results, sometimes from specific Google
services such as Google Local or Froogle.
-
How
long does it take for my results to arrive?
Results should appear within one minute, but
could take a bit longer depending on your
wireless provider.
-
Can I
forward the results to a friend?
Yes, depending on the text messaging options
on your mobile phone or device.
-
What's the maximum number of results I can get
for each query?
Three
-
How
are the results sorted? Is the first result
the most relevant one?
As with all other Google search results, your
Google SMS results are sorted based on their
relevance to your query. The first result is
the most relevant one, and so on.
-
What
does 1of2 stand for?
"1of2" means you're looking at the first of
two messages. You will likely get more than
one result message and we use this notation so
you can read your messages in the right order.
-
Why
are my results sent as multiple messages? Can
I see all of the results in a single message?
We always want to give you the most relevant
results possible. However, all text messages
are limited to 160 characters, so we sometimes
can't send all of your results in a single
message. If your results contain more than 160
characters, they will span multiple messages.
-
What's the maximum number of messages I can
get?
You will most likely receive a maximum of
three messages, although you may occasionally
receive four messages.
-
These
results are so helpful. Please, may I have
some more?
Google SMS is designed to provide quick
information for when you're on the go, so we
show a maximum of three results per query. You
might try refining your query by adding more
words if the result you need is not one of the
top three.
-
I
don't like the results I got. How can I get
more?
You may want to try your query again. But
please first check out
how to use Google SMS
since Google SMS only recognizes certain
specific queries, and will only return results
for these types of queries.
-
I
didn't get any results. What gives?
We're sorry. Please take a look at our
Troubleshooting
section. There are also some specific things
you should know about using Google SMS, so you
may also want to check out
how to use Google SMS
before trying your query again.
Business
listings by Google Local
-
What
is Google Local?
Google Local
locates neighborhood stores and services by
searching billions of pages across the Web,
then cross-checking those results with Yellow
Pages data to pinpoint the resources you want
to find in a specific geographic location.
-
How
do I use Google SMS to get business listings?
Just include a zip code or a city and state
with your search terms. For example, 'Pottery
Barn 02116' or 'Pottery Barn Boston MA'. If
you want to make sure you get Google Local
results, put a period between the business
name and the location. For example, 'Pottery
Barn.02116' or 'Pottery Barn.Boston MA'.
-
I
found the listing I want. Can I get in touch
with them directly using Google SMS?
Not through Google SMS, but you can call them
directly using your mobile phone.
Movie
Showtimes
-
What
are movie showtimes?
Movie showtimes is a feature that Google
provides to help users find relevant
information about movies such as their
showtimes, theater locations, and movie
details, including running time, MPA rating
(e.g., G, PG, PG-13, R), movie genre and movie
critics' rating.
-
What
information can I get about the movie? I want
to know when and where it's playing.
Use Google SMS to get showtimes for a movie
that's currently playing near you. Send a text
message query with the movie title followed by
the zip or city and state. We will return
results that have showtimes by theater
location and movie details, such as running
time, MPA rating (e.g., G, PG, PG-13, R),
movie genre and movie critics' rating.
-
I
want to find a theater near me. How can I get
a list of theaters? Similarly, can I just get
a list of movies playing near me?
If you don't know what theaters or currently
playing movies are near you, you can also send
a text message query requesting this
information by typing 'movie: theaters' or
'movie: movies' followed by your location (zip
or city and state) to get listings of top
movies and showtimes by theater or theater
location by movie, respectively.
-
What's the difference between the results I
get for 'theaters 94043' and 'movie: theaters
94043'
For 'theaters 94103' we include a list of top
movies and their theater locations and local
search results but not showtimes. By including
'movie:' in your query we will provide the
location of the theater along with the
theater's top movie listings and showtimes.
-
Can I
get Google Local results with my movie
showtimes results?
Yes. When you use the following syntax in your
text message query we will provide Google
Local results. Try using 'film', 'films',
'theater' or 'theaters' followed by your zip
or city and state to get local results.
-
What
is the score (e.g., 3.0/5, 2.2/5) after the
movie genre? Where is this coming from?
This is an aggregated movie critics' score
from multiple review sites. This score is
pulled and automatically calculated using
computer algorithms.
Prices by
Froogle
-
What
is Froogle?
Froogle
is a service from Google that makes it easy to
find information about products and prices
online. As Google's spidering software crawls
the Internet, it automatically identifies web
pages that offer products for sale. These are
the pages Froogle searches when you enter the
name of an item you want to find. Froogle also
includes product information submitted
electronically by merchants. We do not accept
payment for inclusion of products in Froogle
search results, so the results you see are the
ones our software has determined to be most
relevant.
-
How
do I use Google SMS to get prices by Froogle?
Just send a query with the name of a product
for which you want to find prices. For
example, 'Canon G5 price' or 'Finding Nemo dvd
price'.
You can specify that you only want prices from
Froogle by including 'price' or 'prices' at
the beginning or end of your query. You can
also specify this by including 'F' before the
product name in your query. For example,
'price ipod 20GB' or 'ipod 20GB price' or 'F
ipod 20GB'.
You can also search by ISBN or UPC of the
product for which you want to find prices. For
example, '043935806X' (the ISBN of 'Harry
Potter and the Goblet of Fire').
-
What
companies am I getting these prices from?
You're getting product prices from merchants
who have provided Google information about
their products. Froogle also returns product
information from web pages that we have
automatically identified as offering products
for sale. Google does not accept payment for
inclusion of products in Froogle search
results.
If you're interested in providing information
to us about your products as a data feed,
please visit the Froogle
Information for Merchants
page.
-
Can I
get a price for a product from a specific
store?
No. The results you get from Froogle are based
on your product query and are automatically
generated by our ranking software.
-
This
result shows a great price! Can I buy it
directly using Google SMS?
No, unfortunately you can't.
Google search
results snippets
-
What
are search results snippets?
A snippet is a text excerpt from the returned
results page that's displayed when you do a
search on Google. Using Google SMS, you can
get up to two snippets per query, although you
won't be able to see the full web results or
click on any of the links.
-
How
do I use Google SMS to get snippets?
Just send your query and include 'G' before
the search terms. For example, 'G San
Francisco population'.
Troubleshooting
-
Google SMS doesn't seem to work on my phone.
What should I do?
Google SMS is still in beta and we're working
hard to make it better. If you've encountered
a problem, try these steps first:
-
Check
to see if text messaging is enabled on your
phone and on your wireless plan. If not, or
you're not sure, call your wireless
provider.
-
Make
sure you sent the text message to the
5-digit US shortcode 46645
-
Double
check that your query is a specialized one
that will trigger results in Google SMS
-
Try
using one of these queries and see if you
get a response:
-
'pizza 94040'
-
'Finding Nemo dvd price'
-
'define lemur'
-
Try to
send a text message to your own phone
number. If you can't, contact your wireless
provider.
There are some bugs we know about:
-
Google
SMS and Treo phones don't seem to play
nicely together.
-
Google
SMS doesn't always work if you've switched
wireless providers while keeping the same
phone number (number portability).
Here are some additional things you should
know:
-
You
will get no results if your phone is
configured to add signatures to all outgoing
text messages. You will have to turn off the
signature feature in order to receive Google
SMS results.
-
US
shortcodes are not supported on T-Mobile
prepay, which means that unfortunately, you
currently can't use Google SMS with T-Mobile
prepay.
-
Any
queries containing the following characters
will not receive any results:
[ \ ] ^ _ { | } ~ `
Google SMS currently supports the default
GSM 3.38 character set, which contains all
English letters, digits, and some
symbols. Even if your cell phone or carrier
supports the above characters, they won't be
recognized by Google SMS. If you are trying
to find the answer to "10 to the power of
2," please try sending '10**2' or '10 to the
power of 2' instead of '10^2'.
If these steps don't address your problems,
please email us at
sms-support@google.com.
While Google SMS is still in
Google Labs,
we are unfortunately unable to answer all the
mail we receive. But we are working hard to
improve Google SMS and you will help us to
make it better by letting us know any problems
you experience while using Google SMS.
-
Why
did I get a "no results" message for a common
search term?
Remember that using Google SMS is not the same
as using Google.com. You're not searching over
all of the information in Google's web index.
You're actually sending Google a specialized
query.
Currently, Google SMS only recognizes certain
specific queries, such as requests for
business listings or prices, and will only
return results for these types of queries.
This means that while your search on
Google.com for 'Madagascar wildlife' returns
lots of webpage results, you likely won't get
any results if you sent this same query using
Google SMS. For the full list of information
you can access using Google SMS, please check
out
how to use Google SMS.
There are also queries for which Google SMS is
currently unable to return results. If we
recognize these queries, we will let you know
that such information 'is not yet supported'.
-
Why
are the messages with my results arriving out
of order?
We put messages in the right order, and
indicate which messages they are ('1of2' or
'3of3'). However, depending on your wireless
provider, messages may sometimes get mixed up
on the way to your phone, just as mail
occasionally gets mixed up on the way to your
mailbox. We thank you for your patience, and
hope you understand.
-
My
results needed to be sent as multiple
messages. Some messages arrived first. Why did
it take so much longer for the others to
arrive?
Depending on your wireless provider, it
sometimes takes awhile for messages to get
delivered. If you receive one message, it
means that we've sent them all to you and you
should be receiving them shortly. It may take
a few minutes for you to receive all of the
messages, so thank you for being patient. If
you still don't receive your messages after a
few minutes, please let us know at
sms-support@google.com,
or contact your wireless provider if problems
persist.
